Transfers between community colleges and four-year institutions are up after dropping during the pandemic.

New report shows transfers rising among disadvantaged groups

A recent report published by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center brings positive news for transfer students and their supporters. The annual “Transfer and Progress” report reveals a notable increase in transfers, particularly among historically disadvantaged groups such as low-income students, Black and Hispanic students, and those from rural areas.

The study found that the number of students who transferred during the fall semester rose by 5.3% compared to the previous year. This growth encompasses both lateral transfers (4-year to 4-year), as well as upward transfers (2-year to 4-year). The surge in transfers was largely driven by a significant 7.7% increase in upward transfers. Additionally, transfers also saw an increase among students who had previously taken a break from their studies.
